The Handmade Furniture Company has been designing and crafting original furniture from solid exotic hardwood for more than eight years.
This family owned business began with a small studio and workshop in Wexford, eventually moving our design and crafting oriented operations to our current location. Our 10,000ft sq store is located at 44 The Quay Waterford, in an historic 200 year-old stone mill, over three floors. This creates a unique shopping experience and compliments our furniture’s eccentricity.
Our passion for design comes from a love and respect for the raw materials we use, which is why in our manufacturing process every caution is taken to use only sustainable resources. Our wood is acquired from renewably farmed forests and we pride ourselves in utilizing every piece of these valuable woods. Some of our raw materials we get from sources where the original trees have outlived their usefulness to fruit growers and would otherwise be destroyed. This highly specialised use of such materials further underlines our environmentally conscious ethos and “green philosophy”.
The process begins by firstly designing a piece of furniture, through conceptual sketches, computer aided construction drawings, and a final “mock up”. From there we do our first cuts into usable dimensions, followed by an exhaustive drying process in our solar kilns for up to three months. Then we craft the piece with great care, using traditional methods of construction. Finally we use all natural washes and oils, giving a unique look and earthy feel to our designs. Our pieces can have panels that may be up to 65mm in depth, lending a durability and sense of gravitas to our contemporary ranges. Proper drying of raw wood is vital to the success of our design and crafting process.
Our design ranges are constantly evolving, in order to provide the widest spectrum of choice to all our customers. Our finishes are all natural, made from various roots, leaves and natural oils.
We have a large stock available in our shop in Waterford. We also have the ability to craft one-of-a-kind pieces designed specifically and uniquely for our valued customers.
